Review: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils (+ Swatches)

As shown in my previous haul post (click here to read it) I picked up some NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils from eBay. I've been after these for quite a while as I've heard they are the drugstore equivalent of the Urban Decay 24/7 pencils. So when I saw an eBay seller was selling 6 of them for around £8 I picked some up. There are quite a few American sellers on eBay which sell them in bundles of 6 (click here) or 12 (click here) as well.

I think there are around 20ish colours in the range in total with a wide range of colours available. The colours I got are black bean (a matte black colour), milk (a matte white colour), strawberry milk (a light pink shimmery colour), pure gold (a shiny shimmery golden colour), electric blue (a mid-toned blue shimmery colour) and purple velvet (a matt deep purple colour).

I really like the pigmentation of the pencils and you don't need to scratch away for hours just to get some colour from them. The pencils are really creamy and soft. I tend to use these pencils underneath eyeshadow to make my eyeshadow really pop. I pair them up with similar eyeshadow colours (apart from milk which I feel you can use under any shade) and apply them to my lid before adding a powder eyeshadow on top. I haven't had the chance to wear these just on their own as I am little bit worried that may crease because of the consistency of them. I may try wearing them with a primer just to see how they look and if they crease or not.

One thing which annoys me with the pencils is that the lids of them have started to crack. I'm not just talking about one of them but all six of them have various cracks in. I'm not sure how long the lids will last but I'm hoping they won't become unusable. Another thing which I found with the pencils is that is that they're very difficult to blend. When you try to blend them the colour just kinda disappears which is a bit of a pain.

Collective Haul

It's been forever since I last posted. I've been meaning to write a post but each time I want to do so the lightning isn't very good to take photographs or I get distracted by something else. I can't wait to be able to take decent photographs without worrying about the lighting. Anyways I thought I would share some of the things I picked up these past few weeks or so. Looking back at some of the purchases I think it's safe to say I won't be needing any mascara for a while. ;)

I purchased these from a Boots Clearance store located in Beckton Triangle Retail Park in London. I paid no more than £2 for each item (the no7 blush & 17 foundation were £2, the other items were £1 each). All the items apart from the blushes are still being sold in Boots for x5 times the price of what I paid for it in the clearance store so a great bargain in my book!

No7 Smokey Eyeliner Brush {Boots - £7.25}; No7 Eyeshadow Blend & Contour Brush {Boots – £7.25}; No7 Eyeshadow Palette (GWP); Natural Collection Moisture Shine in Sweet Pea (£1.99); 17 Peep Show Eye Palette (GWP); Natural Collection Cover Up Cream in Fair {Boots - £1.99}; No7 Extravagant Lashes in Black {Boots – £12.50}; 17 Peep Show Mascara in Black {Boots - £5.29}; Natural Collection WaterGuard Mascara in Black {Boots - £1.99}

I used some No7 £5 vouchers off for the No7 items. I've heard that the Eyeshadow Blend & Contour Brush is a great dupe for the MAC 217 brush and it's a fraction of the cost (only £2.25 when you use a No7 voucher). For my review of the 17 Peep Show Mascara & Eye Palette click here

I filled in the survey on the back of Superdrug receipts to get a discount of 10% on branded items & 25% on Superdrug own branded items (you need to spend a minimum of £10 but it's easily done ;)). Sleek and MUA items qualify for 25% off and Simple and Rimmel London qualifies for 10% off.

Maybelline Colossal Waterproof Mascara {eBay - £4.89}; Suddenly Madame Glamour {Lidl - £3.99}; Chit Chat Lash Building Mascara {Poundland - £1.00}; Origins Spot Remover {Debenhams - £12.00}; Rimmel London 60 Seconds Nail Polish in Desert Beauty {eBay - £2.89}; LA Colors Color Craze Nail Polish {Beauty Base - £0.99}.

I am loving some of the £1 makeup goodies in Poundland at the moment. The mascara isn't half bad when used with my eyelash curler. The Beauty Base website doesn't have many colours in stock of LA Colors nail polishes so if you live near Stratford Westfield I'd suggest you pop into their store and take a look there for a wider range of shades. Click here to read about Suddenly by Madame Glamour being a great dupe for Chanel Coco Madamoiselle.

NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil in Pink Nude {eBay - £3.80}; Topshop Cheeks in Prism {Blogsale}; 17 Supreme Shine Lipstick If You Please {Boots - £4.99}; Barry M Nail Paints {Boots - £2.99}; George Necklaces {Asda - Various Prices}; Hijab Pins {The Islamic Establishment}.

Review: 17 Peep Show Mascara & Smokey Eye Palette (+ Swatches)

A few days ago I popped into Boots to have a look round to see if there was anything that caught my eye. I immediately noticed the new 17 Peep Show mascara. I was first drawn in by the ever so girly pink and black packaging and then once I learnt that you get a free eyeshadow palette with the mascara I was sold. So off I went to the till with my two new products.

The palette comes with four different shades. A slightly shimmery dark brown, a matte grey-black, a pink toned shimmery shade and a brown shimmery shade. They're not very pigmented when used dry without a primer but with a primer underneath the colour payoff is a bit better. My favourite two shades have to be the two on the right the pink and brown shimmery shades. To obtain a smokey eye look I would use the #1 colour all over the lid, #2 in the crease and #3 for the brow bone and inner corner of the eye.

The mascara is your basic non-waterproof black mascara. It comes with a normal brush like wand. The wand is easy to use and you can easily apply it to your upper and lower lashes. One thing I don't like about the formula of the mascara is that it's kinda dry as compared to other mascaras out there. The mascara does add some length to the lashes but it lacks curl so I would suggest using an eyelash curler before applying the mascara. Also I wouldn't advise going for anymore coats than two due to the clumpiness that you may get.

Overall the mascara didn't really wow me as much as I expected and the eyeshadow palette was a bit of a let down as compared to 17's All About Nude palette (which I blogged about here). I will still use the eyeshadow palette as I feel it does have shades which are very veristlile for day to day use but the mascara isn't something I will use often.

The mascara and palette are available in Boots for an introductory price of £5.29 (RRP £6.29)

My 2011 Favourites

Here are 2011 favourites, I've chosen products which I've been using constantly throughout the whole year.

For my monthly favourites through out the year click here to read them.

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Blush (Superdrug £2.99) - I discovered the wonders of dry shampoo in 2011. Before I associated dry shampoo with random white patchy hair even after combing your hair but this Batiste dry shampoo really changed my mind. I love the scent of it and it doesn't leave any white patches at all. It's something I use once or a twice a week when I can't be bothered to wash and blow dry my hair before going out.

Christina Aguerlia By Night (Fragrance Direct £13.95) - I absolutely love the smell of this and it has to be one of my favourite perfumes of all time. There's only a tiny bit left in the bottle and I am trying to save as much of it as possible until I can get my hands on another bottle. I'm hopeless at describing perfumes but here's a description I found: the perfume opens with playful accords of freesia, red apple and mandarin over sparkling fruity-floral notes. The heart of the fragrance is beautiful vanilla blossom that warms gently into the base of seductive and amber and pure vanilla.

St Ives Invigorating Apricot Face Scrub (Superdrug £4.38) - This scrub is a bit like Marmite you either love it or you hate it and I have to say I love it! I use this once or twice a week before cleansing and it always makes my face feel so smooth and soft.

MUA Heaven & Earth Eyeshadow Palette (Superdrug £4.00) - I made a post on this palette earlier this year (click here to read it & for a mini tutorial). It's a really great palette for day-to-day looks and I can either tone it down or glam it up. All the colours are really pigmented and when paired with the MUA eye primer the colours last all day. It's something I can definitely see myself continuing to use in 2012.

The Body Shop Body Scrubs (Body Shop £12.50) - I was a bit apprehensive about whether these scrubs are actually worth their price but as soon as I used them I knew I would never look back. They make my skin feel really smooth without too much effort. My favourite scrub has to be Cocoa Butter one which is currently half price (£6.25). They're a bit on the expensive side in my opinion for body scrubs so I usually pick up a few when they're on offer.

17 Mirror Shine On Lipstick in Beehive (Boots £4.19) - I wear this most days when I need something natural looking, it gives a subtle colour which is not over the top. It's not sticky despite it looking like a gloss. I've nearly finished it and I already have a backup waiting to be used. Click here to see a swatch of it and more pictures.

Pink Tangle Teezer (Boots £10.20)* - I wanted one of these for ages and when I finally got my hands on one I was not disappointed. I use this on wet and dry hair and it gets rid of any tangles without the pain and it makes my hair so easy to comb.

Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner in Black (Superdrug £4.99) - After seeing all the hype surrounding this product I decided to give it a go. It comes with a eyeliner brush as well which is pretty good. The colour of the liner is an intense black and applies beautifully. It lasts all day and doesn't smudge at all. It's definitely worth the every penny.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Blemish Gel (The Body Shop £5.00) - I always tend to get breakouts around my chin area and when I apply this it helps to reduce redness and reduces any swelling. Out of all the blemish gels I have tried this one always wins hands down.

Bourjois Volume & Perfume Rotating Mascara in 51 Black (ASOS £10.00)* - I wrote a review of this mascara back in (click here to read it). I love the length it gives and the way it makes my lashes look. It looks great with one coat for simple lashes or even a few coats for dramatic lashes. It's a bit on the expensive side for a high street mascara but I think it's worth it.

Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser (Superdrug £1.49) - I am in love with Simple products especially their moisturisers. They're non scented, non greasy and don't clog up my pores. They're also pretty inexpensive which is a huge bonus. I reviewed another moisturiser from the Simple range earlier this year (click here to read the review) which I also love.
